What is a BDes, MDes, or a DDes

Recommended Posts

In going for NASAD accreditation, our design department discussed changing our program to offer a BFA. We also considered offering a BDes, but apparently we could not because NYS must approve the degrees and a BDes is not currently recognized in New York.

Does anyone have further details or understand of the requirements of the BDes, and what the process is across the country?

NASAD considers the BDes and BFA to be equivalent, but often the BDes is unfamiliar to more local accreditation systems. This means that each programme may have different challenges in getting the degree "on the books". I would be keen to see more BDes offerings in the US.

Here in New Zealand, the BDes is the expected degree for design study and we struggle to position our NASAD accredited Master of Fine Arts in Design programme alongside our Master of Design programme because design students are wary to join any degree program with "Fine Arts" in the title.

We recently created a BDes degree and while we were excited to do something different and more design focused, it's been interesting to see the external reaction. We mainly get students from PA or the surrounding states, when they visit other schools, those schools mainly have BFA's so it takes a lot more explanation on what the BDes is. We are NASAD accredited institution. I wonder if BDes will take off more in the US or most departments will want to avoid the new but possibly confusing degree (too some).
