Director of Collaborative Innovation, Design Program. Open Rank

Department of Art, Art History and Design,
University of Notre Dame

The Department of Art, Art History, and Design at the University of Notre Dame, invites applications for a faculty position in the design program as Director of Collaborative Innovation.

The department seeks a designer for a full-time faculty position to lead a new and exciting Collaborative Innovation Minor in Design at Notre Dame. The position responsibilities include teaching both design and innovation courses along with ongoing development of cross-disciplinary collaborations between various colleges and departments across the university. The successful candidate will also collaborate with existing industry partners and foster new collaborations with business, design studios, and alumni whose companies are interested in partnering with the design program. The Director will be a member of the design faculty and have the flexibility to shape the strategy and content of this evolving curriculum. The position underscores and strengthens innovation practice at the undergraduate level, preparing students for the changing nature of work and collaboration in the 21st century.

Qualified applicants are asked to present a significant record of accomplishment in collaborative innovation and be fluent in multi-faceted design practices. Our ideal candidate will have expertise in design practice and management of designers and innovation teams. They should have connections to industry, be interested in teaching both design thinking and capstone innovation courses, and be comfortable collaborating with engineers, scientists, humanists, and business leaders alike. Candidates should have a degree in design at either the undergraduate or graduate level.

The Collaborative Innovation Minor was created three years ago to offer non-design majors an opportunity to create and innovate within a design context. The Minor is a dynamic catalyst for process-based, cross-disciplinary collaboration among various academic departments across the university. Utilizing a design thinking methodology, courses in the Minor bring together divergent stakeholders in a dynamic, iterative and deeply human process that accelerates innovative thinking and making. Design is part of a multi-disciplinary creative studies department that includes studio artists and art historians all committed to a collaborative teaching and learning environment within the context of a liberal arts education.

The Department of Art, Art History and Design has twenty-four full-time faculty members and is located within the College of Arts and Letters.
