Aaris Sherin 12
A few years ago I had the dubious distinction of being the only tenured faculty at a round table about tenure and promotion run by Aaron Ganci from Herron School of Art and Design, Indiana University. Out of the 8 or 10 people at the table only 2 reported every "hearing" about a design faculty receiving good mentoring. Fortunately this group doesn't represent all faculty and there are many wonderful senior faculty out there who spend countless hours mentoring junior faculty. Still it is a bit of luck of the draw. And some junior faculty are clearly adrift as they make their way through the tenure and promotion process. This resource does a good job of talking about mentoring both from the standpoint of the mentor and the mentee. Please share any advice, experiences or resources you have had with effective mentoring and career advice.
