We are seeking a dynamic and energetic individual who believes in the value of design fundamentals while embracing innovative and diverse technologies in their creative practice and teaching. The ideal candidate will show evidence of success and impact on their profession and students as well as strong potential within a research-driven university. The candidate should have an in-depth knowledge of typography and a unique perspective and understanding of contemporary media and technology. Professional experience in a design-related field is desirable. UD and our department are committed to socially and community-engaged practice and research. Our program engages students in an educational experience where they learn by doing. In our small classes, students have intense studio experiences exploring their creativity, developing skills, and designing in multiple media. Visual Communications alumni have received the highest honors in design and advertising. Even more, they have experienced and impacted culture in lasting ways. Faculty-led study abroad programs have taken students to such places as Antarctica, Australia, England, South America, and South East Asia. Visual Communication’s internship program places students nationally and internationally. Guest speakers visit campus regularly. UD’s Visual Communications program has an exceptionally strong undergraduate portfolio program. Field trips and portfolio reviews, conducted in cities such as New York, Philadelphia, give students inside career experiences. The Department of Art & Design has a diverse and inclusive faculty. QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Candidates must have a graduate degree (MFA, MS, PhD, MA, MDes, MAD, MGraph, or equivalent terminal degree) in graphic design or related field and preferably at least two years teaching experience at the college level. The full-time, tenure-track Visual Communications faculty teaching load is 3/2 (5 courses a year), comprising a variety of design related courses throughout the department. In addition to teaching, full-time faculty members are expected to maintain active creative research, advise students, participate in curriculum development and other departmental activities, and contribute to the vibrant intellectual life of the University. The successful candidate will teach primarily in the department’s undergraduate Visual Communications BFA program, as well as contribute to curriculum development within the program and the department’s core courses. This person will also engage in critical dialog across the department degree programs, which include Visual Communications, Bachelor of Art, Fine Arts and the two graduate programs, Studio Arts and Interaction Design. Start date for these positions is August 1, 2019. The ideal candidate for the Interactive Design position (415080) will have extensive professional, creative-industry experience in traditional print and digital graphic design media. Applicants should exhibit a mastery of graphic design skills; have comprehensive knowledge of design principles; demonstrate a solid understanding of typography in their work; possess knowledge of UI/UX design trends and theories; exhibit expertise in traditional and new design industry-standard software; have professional, creative-industry experience; and recognition for their achievements in the field. MFA in Graphic Design or a comparable MFA/terminal degree in an affiliated discipline. The successful candidate for the Illustration position (122250) will have extensive professional experience in traditional and digital illustration mediums.
