The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and Department of Arts, Culture and Media at Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N) invite applications for a tenure-track position in Design / Visualization at the Assistant or early Associate Professor level, based at RU-N, to begin September 2019. We seek a design professional working in the intersection between design/visual arts and visualization/data science. Committed to building a cluster of faculty around interdisciplinary Graphic Design, Computer Science, Data Science, and AI, we also are hiring in the areas of Philosophy and Machine Learning. We seek candidates who have a dynamic and interdisciplinary conception of their research, who can contribute to research and teaching in their areas, and as a core around which to build a new research center, graduate program, and undergraduate programs in interdisciplinary Graphic Design, Computer Science, Data Science, and AI. The successful candidate should have a strong mastery of visual form, typography, and critical language, and a commitment to advancing the design discipline through the innovative use of evolving technologies, traditional and new media used in the fields of visual communication, user experience, and motion design. Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be responsible for undergraduate and graduate teaching in the areas of Graphic Design, Computer Science, Data Science, and/or Artificial Intelligence. Candidates must undertake independent scholarly activity appropriate for advancement within Rutgers University. Candidates will also be responsible for usual advising and administrative duties. Requirements: M.F.A. or Ph.D. by time of appointment; relevant teaching experience; a record of scholarly work and a clear research agenda, demonstrating the ability to build a body of recognized work suitable for tenure at a research university. We welcome submissions on such topics as (but not limited to): the environment, advocacy and law, health and medical applications, social and political issues, cultural analysis and collections, digital humanities, and projects in data journalism. Authors accepted for presentation at the conference will have an opportunity to submit articles for publication in a special issue of an academic journal (to be announced soon). The special issue will contain articles selected by a peer review process. Deadline: May 15, 2018
