We are seeking a dynamic and energetic individual who believes in the value of design fundamentals while embracing innovative and diverse technologies in their creative practice and teaching. The ideal candidate will show evidence of success and impact on their profession and students as well as strong potential within a research-driven university. The candidate should have an in-depth knowledge of typography and a unique perspective and understanding of contemporary media and technology. Professional experience in a design-related field is desirable. UD and our department are committed to socially and community-engaged practice and research. Our program engages students in an educational experience where they learn by doing. In our small classes, students have intense studio experiences exploring their creativity, developing skills, and designing in multiple media. Visual Communications alumni have received the highest honors in design and advertising. Even more, they have experienced and impacted culture in lasting ways. Faculty-led study abroad programs have taken students to such places as Antarctica, Australia, England, South America, and South East Asia. Visual Communication’s internship program places students nationally and internationally. Guest speakers visit campus regularly. UD’s Visual Communications program has an exceptionally strong undergraduate portfolio program. Field trips and portfolio reviews, conducted in cities such as New York, Philadelphia, give students inside career experiences. The Department of Art & Design has a diverse and inclusive faculty. We welcome all candidates, desiring to expand our knowledge and experience base, and cultivate creative innovation. QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Candidates must have a graduate degree (MFA, MS, PhD, MA, MDes, MAD, MGraph, or equivalent terminal degree) in graphic design or related field and preferably at least two years teaching experience at the college level. The full-time, tenure-track Visual Communications faculty teaching load is 3/2 (5 courses a year), comprising a variety of design related courses throughout the department. In addition to teaching, full-time faculty members are expected to maintain active creative research, advise students, participate in curriculum development and other departmental activities, and contribute to the vibrant intellectual life of the University. The successful candidate will teach primarily in the department’s undergraduate Visual Communications BFA program, as well as contribute to curriculum development within the program and the department’s core courses. This person will also engage in critical dialog across the department degree programs, which include Visual Communications, Bachelor of Art, Fine Arts and the two graduate programs, Studio Arts and Interaction Design. Starting Date: August, 2020 Minimum Qualifications: 1) An earned MFA with an emphasis in Communication Design or a related field; 2) Evidence of practical knowledge, experience, and skill in contemporary Communication Design; 3) Evidence of successful professional design practice; 4) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level Preferred Qualifications: 1) Experience in any of the following: interaction design, design history, theory or criticism, human-centered design, typographic design, environmental graphic design, service design, packaging design; 2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the graduate level; 3) Three years previous teaching experience at the university level; 4) Five years of professional design practice. Duties: The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. The successful candidate will support our students in developing projects with purpose as part of a socially and culturally engaged college. They will teach undergraduate and graduate students in the BA-Art, Graphic Design/Visual Communication and MA/MFA Design programs, as well as an anticipated certificate in Emerging Media Analysis and Design. We are #6. So we exceed the demands of the market. This suggests that competition will be tight and we should be making sure we have a diverse skillset, and thinking big picture when it comes to the services we offer...
