  1. @Steven McCarthy – I am just seeing this post and curious about this since we are looking to write new guidelines for design faculty that are different from art faculty. Your chart looks like a good way to visualize the range of research. I'm wondering if there are guidelines you may be able to share?
  2. The University of Florida School of Art + Art History, College of the Arts, invites applications for the position Assistant Professor in Graphic Design. The faculty member will pursue an active program of research; teach a 2–2 load of courses at the undergraduate and graduate level; supervise MFA students; and contribute service to the university, the community, and the profession.   3. i'm curious as to the response to this at the university level. I know of some departments (only at private institutions) where this happens and in departments with such diverse disciplines faculty are not experts nor understand the nuances of all disciplines, so external letters are useful to contextualize work within the field. The concerns you voice are ones I would have for any colleague.
  4. this is really an important issue in our departmental guidelines and I think across the university. communication design is so broad that you have to find reviewers who have appropriate experiences to review work otherwise this is doing a disservice to all involved. we had changed our guidelines to reflect this almost a decade ago and it has served us well.
  5. I am at a research university (top 10 public), we have qualitative assessment so it's hard for me to put numbers on them – they all have to be contextualized. In general, though, I think they are from high to low here – but nothing is so low to merit no attention. I'd be interested in other ways of assessing. Maria Published Book (highly respected, fluctuates based on press and peer review process) but demonstrates a high level of research contribution to the field Grant Base Research Project (varies based on source, amount, role) Peer Review Publication (helps demonstrate consistent contribution and more substantial than conference presentation) Peer Review Conference Presentation (these vary now, some in Europe are double blind peer reviewed full paper so this shifts how we think about conference presentations)
  6. we have the highest carnegie classification and our research expectations are high. that being said, i think there's room for innovation. most of my research has been focused on international work, and that is significantly higher than national achievement. in addition, we have a lot of freedom to pursue our own path. i have found mine with a mix of peer-reviewed outcomes, and i find that helpful. rather than one track, i have multiple trajectories, with research woven together topically. i think this is a good opportunity for some designers.
  7. i am very interested in this topic for several reasons. i began at my university under guidelines for art faculty and the field has changed significantly since that time. they were still open enough as to accommodate design, but now, there are some differences. One of my colleagues is working with the AIGA DEC and mentioned this: https://educators.aiga.org/category/resources/promotion-tenure/ In general, we go up at the end of our 6th year for promotion and tenure, have 5 external letters from faculty in our area of specialization, and are evaluated externally ONLY on research. i feel the process is fair (in so far as this can be), particularly since faculty can select ½ the reviewers and the others need to know your kind of design. However, there are new things designers are working on that need to be factored in. Also, not everything has the level of peer review that a traditional academic will have. As RJ writes above, all the voting and letters are advisory until the president and board of trustees. a positive or negative vote can be overturned at any stage. and peer review can direct the path – I am in a department with 5 disciplines. It is the peer reviewers who have a lot of weight. If they are negative, it can go very badly. i have found it advisable to share materials with other colleagues to get them on board with your work prior to going up.
